"When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, the son of man that You care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of Your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!" Psalms 8:3-9
I have had the opportunity to admire the glaciers of Alaska in the North Pole and the glaciers of Chile in the South pole; the view of their summer night sky is spectacular! We marvel at nature and the galaxy, yet sometimes we miss the most remarkable creation of all, ourselves! We tend to think that we are nothing among this great universe. Even King David grappled with this idea after evaluating the spectacular view of the sky during a clear night; "what is man that You are mindful of him." Some people wrestle with the thought that we are of little value even though we are the product of the Greatest Artist of all, God. We have incredible worth, not because of what we do, but because of Who has made us. Yet, the world does not see it that way.
1. The lie of the evolution theory
The world believes in a far-fetched evolution process. It's no wonder people question their value. It is hard to feel special when you think you were created by random processes involving primordial soup. You can't get too excited about your existence when you are taught that your placement on this earth is due entirely to unplanned and unreasoned luck.
2. The foundational question that determines our approach to life is: Where did we come from?
If you think that you just appeared and are the result of a chemical accident, you will constantly battle with the question of worth. But if you can resolve in your life that the Bible is true and that you were hand-crafted by the Creator God, then you have a solid foundation from which to build. That is why the Bible is the foundation on which we first must start.
When a world-renowned painter produces a work of art, its value is mainly determined by its author, not by the essence of the artwork. In the same way, our worth and value are not based on who we are but rather on Who created us. God took the time to create and shape each one of us into a special and unique being. We are God's hand-crafted masterpieces.
A few years ago, I visited the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, where the famous Mona Lisa painting is exhibited. Looking at the image objectively, I may not have understood how it could be considered valuable, but that is the point, isn't it? It may not be worth much on its own, but because it was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, who is considered one of the best painters of all time, the painting is treasured. The painting's worth is found in who painted it, not in what the picture contains.
3. Our God determines our worth
At times, some pretty ugly things may surface in our lives. We all struggle with our insecurities. Thus, it is vital for us to grasp the “artist-artwork” concept. We must never forget that our worth is not determined by our ability to be great; the ability of our great God determines our worth.
It is not about who you are but "whose" you are that matters.
So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27
As believers, we should never question our worth and value. Our worth has nothing to do with us; it has everything to do with the One Who created us. We are an original painting made by the hand of God, and that makes us of significant worth!
Have a Blessed Week,
