“But charge Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, for he shall go over at the head of this people.” Deuteronomy 3:28
The most powerful way to motivate someone and fill their emotional tank is to encourage them. Encouragement is an irresistible form of inspiration.
The word encourage is a compound of the prefix en, meaning to put in or into, and courage means confidence and strength. To “encourage,” therefore, literally means to put courage into someone.
I. Courage will strengthen you
When courage resides in someone’s heart, they are bolder, stronger, and more effective in all that they do.
Their bravery will push them to overcome any obstacle that may stand in their way.
Courage conquers fear and motivates an individual to do things they never thought possible.
Hope gives people the possibility of a greater future, and encouragement gives them the strength to go after it.
Olympic weight-lifter, author, and speaker, Jim Stovell, said, “You need to be aware of what others are doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their successes, and encourage them in their pursuits. When we all help one another, everyone wins.”
II. The five most important words
The five most important words are: I have confidence in you
The four most important words are: “What is your opinion?”
The three most important words are: “If you please.”
The two most important words are: “Thank you.”
The most important word is: “We.”
The least important word is: “I.”
III. Encouraging others takes the focus off of you and places it on another.
When people are recognized and valued, it puts wind in the sails of their future.
The more encouragement people receive from you, the more likely they are to open up to you.
Influence is only effective when relationships are developed through genuinely positive interactions.
People are much more willing to listen to you and trust you when they have an encouraging relationship with you.
Making encouragement a priority in your communication will open up a direct line of connection.
William Arthur Ward said, “Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you.”
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” I Thessalonians 5:11.
People are most influenced by those who consistently encourage them than by those who constantly criticize them.
Have a blessed week,
