“It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day HE RESTED and was REFRESHED.”

~Exodus 31:17

If you study some of the most successful people, from Presidents to Pastors, you’ll find several common denominators among them. One of the common denominators is that they all have hobbies. For example:

  • Former President, George W. Bush, is an avid painter

  • Billionaire Richard Branson’s favorite sport is kiteboarding

  • Investor Warren Buffet practices an in-house daily exercise.

  • Inventor Albert Einstein loved to sail

  • Apple Founder Steve Jobs played guitar

  • Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin does trapeze

  • Pastor Anthony Mangun likes to hike in the mountains of Colorado.

1. Healthy hobbies allow us to escape busy calendars and replenish our quality of life.

“All work plus no play equals psychological disarray.”

~Unknown author

God himself, after creating the world, “... rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.” Genesis 2:2

Christians should engage in a physical hobby because doing so means investing in our well-being.

2. Having healthy creative outlets allows us to decompress from stress.

Everyone should have a hobby that they can get lost in at times.

The work-to-play oscillation generates more creative energy.

As a kid growing up in Quito, I struggled roller skating up the Andean hills. But once I reached the hilltop, I would roll down at full speed, with enough momentum to propel me past the finish line.

Similarly, hobbies create a propelling momentum that gives us the mental and physical strength to keep persevering. They reward us with improved creativity, spiritual and emotional restoration, self-confidence, stress relief, social connection, idea generation, leadership lessons, and broader awareness.

Simply put, cycling, walking, hiking, running, weight lifting, or other sports, as hobbies, are extremely good for the soul and the mind.

Have a blessed week,

Pastor (Rev. Elias Limones)
